Strategic situation

From Iron Horse

An introduction to some naval terms, and illustration of where the elements of the Alpha Crucis Fleet are based in Alpha Crucis Sector.

Firstly, a BATRON, or Battleship Squadron. Usually four battleships, in two Divisions (or BATDIVS) of two ships each. The punchiest arm of the Imperial Navy. Divided into Dreadnought, First Class or Second Class, depending on the kind of battleships they have. The squadron will have 4-6 escort ships with it too.

CRURONs - or Cruiser Squadrons. Usually two CRUDIVS for a total of four ships. You can probably work out what a HVYCRURON, ARMCRURON or LTCRURON is. Again, plus 4-6 escorts.

CARGRPs are Carrier Groups, usually a single cruiser-sized carrier with well over a hundred fighters, plus its escort group.

ESCRONs, DESRONs and ESCDESRONs are squadrons made purely of escorts; either Fleet Escorts, Fleet Destroyers or Escort Destroyers.

The Alpha Crucis fleet is a powerhouse, designed primarily to hold the line if the Hive Federarion (just right of the map) should attack.

The bulk of the fleet is concentrated at the Sector Naval Depot at Kiene; six BATRONS, five CRURONS and 3 squadrons of escorts. This is the reaction force, designed to counterattack any fleets breaking through from the border.

A secondary strongpoint is Cyan, guarding the Coreward point of the border with the Hive Federation and poised to block a thrust upwards into the Old Expanses. Four BATRONS, four CARGRPS and four CRURONS, supported by seven squadrons of escorts.

New Jakarta is a tertiary strongpoint, poised ready to reinforce the Spica fleet in case of a Hiver attack. A single BATRON, two CARGRPs and 2 CRURONS, supported by six squadrons of escorts, mostly smaller types.

Finally, a single BATRON is parked at Turin, backed up by 2 CARGRPs and a LTCRURON. This is the deep reserve, and definitely not keeping a weather on Turin.
